The Bogutovačka Banja health resort
In central Serbia, near the city of Kraljevo, lies the lovely spa of Bogutovačka Banja. It nestles on the slopes of the mighty Troglav mountain to its west, with the Čemerno mountain close by. To the east stretch the beautiful, densely forested mountains of Željin and Stolovi. Between these two mountain ranges flows the famous Ibar river, only about 3 kilometres from the spa. And that is not all — one of the most beautiful and cleanest rivers in the country, the Lopatnica, also flows through this area. The natural and healing qualities of this region are renowned far and wide.
It lies some two hundred kilometres from Belgrade, but is quickly and easily reached via the Ibar highway. A 2.5 km asphalt road leads from the highway to the spa itself. Kraljevo is just under 25 kilometres away. Nearby is a station on the railway line connecting Belgrade with Skopje, so Bogutovačka Banja is very well connected with the rest of Serbia.
At an altitude of 520 metres, Bogutovačka Banja has a moderate-continental climate that suits every constitution. Thanks to the protective role of the surrounding mountains, you will never encounter harsh weather here — no strong winds, fog or sudden changes in air pressure. Everything here breathes peace, including the climate itself. It is often called the „Neuro spa“, famous for nature that exudes extraordinary calm and thus provides excellent therapy for the nerves. The unspoilt, preserved nature has a great influence on the health of everyone who stays here.

The waters of Bogutovačka Banja are used in treatment in two ways: by drinking and by bathing. The conditions most successfully treated here include:
- Neuropsychiatric conditions: painful states such as neuralgia and neurosis, as well as various disorders of the nervous system, including conditions such as multiple sclerosis, chronic migraine and neurotic syndrome. These conditions can cause physical and mental symptoms, so it is important to seek professional healthcare.
- Certain forms of rheumatism: non-articular and degenerative forms of rheumatism which can cause pain and restricted movement. This can be frustrating and limiting, but treatments exist that help relieve the symptoms.

The thermal mineral water of Bogutovačka Banja benefits the body in many ways, especially in treating all kinds of rheumatic complaints, neuropsychiatric conditions, digestive, skin and endocrine disorders, as well as muscular and heart complaints. The thermal springs are well worth a visit, as bathing in the modern pools and tubs can improve the overall health of the body. The water is rich in magnesium, calcium, sodium, iron, aluminium, hydrocarbonates, chlorine and sulphates, and also contains silicic acid. The thermal mineral water has been rising here for a very long time — a conclusion drawn from the tufa deposits on the slope below the spring.
History of Bogutovačka Banja and Hotel Mineral
Back in 1835, the government of the Principality of Serbia ordered the first chemical tests and analyses of the mineral waters of Bogutovačka Banja. These tests are in fact the first verified records of the spa. A few decades later, the first lodgings for visitors were built, along with a wooden pool for bathing in the healing waters — the first steps in the development of the spa.
In the 1930s the first well was built, the lodgings were refurbished and a mineral bath was constructed. This first mineral bath in Bogutovačka Banja operated until the 1950s, when the first modernisation began with the construction of modern baths and new hospitality facilities.
In 1985 a larger hotel was built, bearing the symbolic name „Mineral“, with a capacity of 200 beds. That same year, the purest and healthiest drinking water was piped down from the higher slopes of Troglav.
The healing waters of Bogutovačka Banja
Three mineral springs are known at Bogutovačka Banja. The two older ones were discovered at the same time, as they lie one above the other. These waters are among the first ever chemically tested and analysed in the country, back in 1835. By composition they are classed as mildly sulphurous waters, richest in magnesium, calcium, sodium, iron, aluminium, hydrocarbonates, chlorine and sulphates…
They are also said to contain certain radioactive elements such as silicic acid. The third spring came into use in the late 1950s. The yield of these springs is roughly ten litres per second. With temperatures ranging from 24 to 27°C, the waters are classed as hypothermal.
The advantage of these pleasant temperatures is that the water needs no additional heating or cooling, which also suits some heart patients. The waters are used both for bathing and for drinking. In the pools filled with this mineral water, patients undergoing therapy simply rest. Recent tests at the Belgrade Institute for Rehabilitation have confirmed the healing properties of these waters.
